Art print from the Rome Series. The Colosseum

The construction of the Colosseum began between 70 and 72 AD. It hosted shows such as venationes (animal fights) or noxii (executions of prisoners by animals), as well as munera: gladiatorial fights.
It is estimated that some 200,000 people died in these games. Naumachiae, spectacular naval battles that required flooding the arena with water, were also held. The Colosseum possessed an advanced water system that allowed the lower level to be filled and emptied quickly. In ancient times, it had a capacity for about 50,000 spectators, with eighty rows of seating. Those closest to the arena were the Emperor and the senators, while the lower strata of society were located as one ascended the tiers.

Printed sheet on 320 gsm paper. High-quality embossing. Measures 23 x 23 cm.
