St. Peter's Basilica Art Print, ROME
Art print from the Rome Series. St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican
Churches have existed on the site of the basilica since the 4th century. Construction of the current building, on the site of the old Constantinian basilica, began in 1506, by order of Pope Julius II, and was completed in 1626. Some of the most renowned architects in history worked on it, such as Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, and Bernini.
The construction was entrusted to the architect Donato Bramante. The building has a Greek cross plan inscribed within a square and is covered by five domes, the central one being the largest and supported by four massive pillars. Under Michelangelo's direction, the walls of the apse, of imposing monumentality, were erected. However, the most important contribution of the great genius was the large dome located directly above the high altar, over the tomb of the Apostle Saint Peter.
