Trafalgar Square Art Print, LONDON
Art print from the London Series. Trafalgar Square
Central London square, built to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar in which the British navy defeated the French and Spanish navies off Cape Trafalgar in Cadiz in 1805. The original name was William IV Square, but George Ledwell Taylor suggested changing the name.
Nelson's Column stands in the center of the square, surrounded by four enormous bronze lions sculpted by Sir Edwin Landseer. It is said that the metal used to cast them came from a French cannon.
The National Gallery is located on the north side of the square, and to the east is the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields.
