The cathedral, built after the fire of 1374, is the result of a long and gradual process, encompassing various elements: the church, the cloister, the portico, the sacristy, and the tower-façade. Begun at the end of the 14th century, around 1397, in the then-prevailing Classical Gothic style, construction progressed slowly for over a century. By the mid-15th century, the triforium and ambulatory with its five central chapels were completed. In the second half of the century, work continued on the other chapels at the east end, and later, at the turn of the 16th century, on the side chapels of the nave. Around this same time, the cloister and the Angel's Gate, which provides access from the street and incorporates elements of the Flamboyant Gothic style, were also built.
