Art print from the Spain Series. Hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

On the island of Gaztelugatxe stands a hermitage dedicated to Saint John. Next to it is a small shelter offering protection from the frequent storms. The access is spectacular: a narrow path leading from the mainland and across the rocks via a stone bridge allows you to reach the top of the islet after climbing 241 steps.
The islet is crisscrossed by tunnels and features numerous arches. Rocky beaches open up on either side.
The small church dedicated to the Beheading of Saint John dates from the 10th century.
In 1593 it suffered a corsair attack at the hands of Francis Drake in which it was looted; this was one of the many incidents it has suffered throughout its history, as it has caught fire several times.
