The Puerta de Alcalá is one of the five ancient royal gates that gave access to the city of Madrid. It gave access to travelers who previously entered the town from France, Aragon or Catalonia. It is located next to the Cibeles Fountain and the Retiro Park. It was built in 1778, by order of Charles III, replacing another previous door that had existed since the 16th century. The design and work belongs to the Italian architect Francesco Sabatini.
It is a neoclassical style door with a monumental appearance similar to the Roman Triumphal Arches, it was erected facing its. It is the first triumphal arch built in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire, being a precursor to others such as the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
