Cathedral of Santa Cruz print, CÁDIZ
Art print from the Spain Series. Santa Cruz Cathedral in Cádiz
The Cathedral of Cádiz, "Santa Cruz sobre el mar" or "Santa Cruz sobre las Aguas", is also known by the people of Cádiz as the New Cathedral, in contrast to the Old Cathedral, built in the 16th century on top of the old Gothic Cathedral ordered to be built by Alfonso X the Wise.
The Gothic Cathedral endured with some reforms carried out in the 15th and 16th centuries until it was burned by the Anglo-Dutch squadron commanded by Admiral Howard, which attacked, invaded and sacked Cadiz in 1596.
The cathedral begins in the Baroque style, as seen in its floor plan and interior up to the Rococo frieze, and is finished in the Neoclassical style, in its facade, towers, domes and the second level of the interior, as well as most of the altarpieces and the main altar.
