Basilica del Pilar Print, ZARAGOZA
Art print from the Spain Series. Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza
Architecturally, the church is structured into three naves of equal height, covered with barrel vaults interspersed with domes and saucer vaults, all resting on robust pillars. The exterior is brick, while the interior is finished with stucco. The central nave is divided by the main altar beneath the central dome, which houses the large altarpiece of the Assumption, originally from the previous church. Beneath the other two domes of the central nave are the Chapel of Our Lady of the Pillar, and the choir and organ, which also came from the earlier Gothic church.
Our Lady of the Pillar has held the rank of cathedral since the Bull of Union of 1676, sharing the seat of the Archbishop of Zaragoza with the neighboring Cathedral of the Savior, called La Seo. In 1948, Pope Pius XII granted it the title of Minor Basilica.
