Of the ten mosques that the city once had, it is the best preserved. In Muslim times it was a small oratory linked to an access gate to the city (Bab al-Mardum) for use by newcomers to Toledo or for preparation for departure. It was built in the year 999, the time of splendor of the Caliphate of Córdoba, as stated in the epigraphic strip on its access façade. Different elements, mainly an apse, were added in the 12th century, after the Christian conquest of the city, when Alfonso VI gave the building to the knights of the order of Saint John, who established a hermitage there dedicated to the Holy Cross. . This extension is considered the oldest example of Mudejar art on record.
