Since its unveiling in 1886, the statue has been the first sight European immigrants saw upon arriving in the United States after their transatlantic voyage. Besides being a major landmark in New York City, it has become a symbol across the United States, representing, more broadly, freedom and liberation from oppression.
The statue depicts a woman standing upright, wearing a wide stole and a seven-pointed crown symbolizing the seven continents and seven seas. The crown features 25 windows representing gems found on Earth and rays of light shining upon the world.
