The history of the city and the estuary are strongly linked: Bilbao was born where the estuary began to be navigable and there was a bridge that crossed it. The first signs of population were recorded in the year 1075, with a group of fishermen who gathered around the small church in the territory of Santurce. From that moment on, a rapid development of maritime commercial activities began throughout the Middle Ages, including the founding of the town of Bilbao in 1300 and that of Portugalete in 1322. In the following centuries, the port was consolidated as the most important commercial center of the Señorío de Vizcaya, directing its activities first with the rest of the European continent, and later with the American colonies.
