Art print from the Spain Series. Basilica of Begoña

Construction work began in the first decade of the 16th century. It consists of a large central nave with a polygonal apse and two slightly lower side naves covered with a cross vault from the 17th century, on ten robust cylindrical pillars. Throughout the century that the works lasted, the unitary direction of the Gothic style varied somewhat, since, in the mid-16th century, the main doorway was formulated as a magnificent Mannerist triumphal arch. The rest maintains the aforementioned unitary Gothic style. The works were paid for thanks to the alms of the faithful, mostly residents of the Town of Bilbao. Testimony of this are the escutcheons that crown the pillars of the central nave, which do not contain the arms of noble families, but rather the emblems of merchants and guilds of the town. The image of the Virgin could not be moved to its new church until December 1603, when it was installed on a modest altar.
