Lizard Print Park Güell, BARCELONA
Art print from the Barcelona Series. Lizard from Park Güell
This is the third fountain on the steps of the Park. The lizard, dragon, or salamander, made of thin brick covered with colorful trencadís mosaic, is 2.4 meters long. There are different interpretations of its meaning: it may represent the alchemical salamander, symbolizing the element of fire; the mythological Python of the Temple of Delphi; or the crocodile that appears on the coat of arms of the city of Nîmes, where Güell grew up.
This figure has become the emblem of the garden and one of Barcelona's. A replica of this figure has been in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid since 1969. Above this figure is a small tripod-shaped structure, alluding to the one used by the Pythia of Delphi.
