Art print. Tower of Hercules in La Coruña

The origin of the tower is unknown, although it was rebuilt by the Romans in the 1st century. The Tower of Hercules was built as a navigation lighthouse. The Inscription at the foot of the tower and the documentary references about the city of Brigantium reveal the existence of a lighthouse from the time of Trajan.
The oldest mention of the Tower is found in the Historiæ adversvm Paganos by Paulo Orosio, written around 415-417 AD. C., which says: In the second corner of the course, the circumnavigation of Hispania, where the city of Brigantia Gallæciæ is located, a very tall lighthouse stands among a few works reminding us of the route to Britannia.
