The city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999 for being a unique example of a non-walled colonial city. It is home to the Consultative Council of the Canary Islands, the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands, the Diocese of Tenerife, the Tenerife North Airport and the University Hospital of the Canary Islands.
In addition, the first university founded in the Canary Islands is also based in the city, and the first and oldest active institute in the archipelago, which is why La Laguna was historically considered the intellectual center of the Canary Islands.
It was the headquarters of the Captaincy General of the Canary Islands (1656-1723), and until 18338 it was the de facto capital of the Canary archipelago.
