Art print from the Spain Series. Monastery of San Millán de Yuso

The Royal Monastery of San Millán de Yuso (yuso meant 'below' in ancient Spanish) is located in the town of San Millán de la Cogolla. It is part of the monumental complex of two monasteries, along with the oldest Monastery of San Millán de Suso (above).
This monastery was ordered to be built in the year 1053 by King García Sánchez III of Navarra. The story of its foundation is linked to a legend based on a miracle of Saint Millán, a young shepherd who becomes a hermit. When Millán died in 574, at the age of 101, his disciples buried him in his cave, and the first monastery, that of San Millán de Suso, was formed around it.
The original Romanesque Yuso monastery was completely demolished and rebuilt in the 16th century, in the Herrerian style, from the 17th and 18th centuries.
