The Royal Monastery of Santa María de Poblet is the prototype of a Spanish Cistercian abbey. Located in the Cuenca de Barberá region, in the municipality of Vimbodí and Poblet, in Tarragona, the first monastery was promoted and sponsored by Ramón Berenguer IV, count of Barcelona, who gave it to the Bernard monks of the Fontfroide abbey. in the year 1149.
It was the royal pantheon of the Crown of Aragon, from the end of the 14th century until the extinction of the royal house of Aragon in the 15th century.
Enriched with various donations, it reached its maximum splendor in the 14th century, and its total decline and abandonment in 1835 as a consequence of the confiscation of Mendizábal. In 1991 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
