The Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso de Alcalá de Henares was founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros as the origin of the historic University of Alcalá. It was closed as a residence hall in September 1798. It is currently the rectorate of the new University of Alcalá.
It is one of the most important works of the Spanish Renaissance and declared a World Heritage Site, along with the rest of the historic center of Alcalá de Henares.
On the façade we can find the following symbols:
The Holy Trinity (The celestial), Gargoyles (demonic figures), Charles V (Head of the earthly world), Saint Peter (Head of the Church) Library (Knowledge) Saint Paul (Head of the Church) and Fathers of the Church ( Pillars and supports of Western Culture).
