Its silhouette resembles an imaginary ship on the gorge where the Eresma and Clamores rivers meet. The earliest surviving documentary record of the building dates from 1122.
A deep moat with a drawbridge leads to a fortress in a strategic location, possibly inhabited since Celtic times. Its restoration has been ongoing since a devastating fire in 1862 that nearly destroyed it completely. However, in 1882, during the reign of Alfonso XII, its reconstruction began and has been continuously maintained by the Alcázar Trust ever since.
The small tower of Alfonso X the Wise stands out in the northern corner, from which this monarch studied the firmament, and the tower of John II, 80 m high, with beautiful sgraffito and twelve turrets adorning its volume.
