Its construction began in 1221, following French Gothic patterns. The design of the main façade is related to the classic French Gothic style of the great cathedrals (Paris or Reims). It consists of three sections topped by two square towers. The openwork spires, of Germanic influence, were added in the 15th century. Also noteworthy on the exterior are the Sarmental and Coronería portals, Gothic from the 13th century, and the Pellejería portal, with Renaissance-Plateresque influences from the 16th century. The interior elevation of the church is modeled after the French cathedral of Bourges.
