The Old Town of Cáceres is delimited in two large areas by the wall: intramuros and extramuros.
The area within the city walls is commonly known as the "Monumental City" or "Old Town" and is the most well-known part, while the area outside the walls is less familiar. Since the Middle Ages, the entire Old Town has been divided into four parishes, around which the city's structure developed. These four parishes are Santa María, San Mateo, Santiago, and San Juan, with the first two located within the walls and the last two outside.
