The main aesthetic achievement of Eiffel and his collaborators was having the audacity to make the building's structure (which until then had always been modestly hidden behind walls and facades, as an essential yet inconvenient element) the absolute protagonist of the construction, a kind of exoskeleton that transferred the language of engineering works to a building unusual for its need to be both a 300m high tower and an attractive and easily accessible place for the thousands of people who were expected to visit the tower daily.
It is not surprising that when it was built, its contemporaries criticized its "unfinished" appearance, which was absolutely inconceivable to the mentality of the time.
