Print of Santa María de Mediavilla, TERUEL
Art print. Pórtico de la Gloria of Santiago de Compostela
Teruel Cathedral has its origins in the church of Santa María de Mediavilla, which began to be built in the Romanesque style in 1171 and was completed with the erection of the Mudejar tower in 1257. In the second half of the 13th century, the Moorish master builder Juzaff restructured the old Romanesque work and gave the building three Mudejar naves of masonry and brick, which improved and raised the Romanesque structure of the 12th century.
In the same Gothic-Mudéjar style, the Romanesque apses were replaced in the 14th century, as can be seen in the head of the main chapel. In 1423, already with the Mudéjar appearance by which the church is essentially known today, the Aragonese pontiff Benedict XIII, known as "Papa Luna," elevated it to the rank of Collegiate Church.
