San Antón Bridge Print, BILBAO
Art print from the Spain Series. San Anton Bridge
Before 1318, it even precedes the founding of the town in the year 1300. For centuries it was the only bridge that crossed the estuary. The people of Bilbao used all their resources to prevent another bridge from taking away their monopoly on communications between the two banks.
It is the emblem of Bilbao and this old bridge, also called the old bridge, is reflected in its shield. It is of medieval origin. This bridge had historical importance, since it was an obligatory passage for trade between Vizcaya and Castile. In the 15th century, criminals were imprisoned under this bridge. Embomiento was a deeply rooted method of execution that consisted of tying a stone to the neck of the condemned and throwing it into the water.
It was rebuilt once again in 1937, after being blown up during the Spanish Civil War.
