Art print from the New York Series. Brooklyn Bridge towards Manhattan
It is an emblem of 19th-century engineering due to the innovative use of steel as a large-scale construction material at the time. It is so well-built that it is still in use today.
In August 1876, the Manhattan and Brooklyn riverbanks were joined for the first time by a steel cable. To demonstrate its strength, master mechanic E.F. Farrington crossed the East River by sliding along the cable in a chair. In February 1877, the construction of the anchor towers and piers was completed, and they were temporarily connected by a pedestrian walkway. The two piers, Gothic in style with double arches, stood 84 meters tall.
