On the central mullion, one must begin by describing the seated figure of Saint James the Apostle, with his pilgrim's staff, as the patron saint of the basilica. Saint James is depicted holding a scroll inscribed with "Misit me Dominus" (The Lord sent me). Above his head, the column terminates in a capital depicting the Temptations of Christ on three sides: one facing inward, and another showing two kneeling angels in prayer. At the saint's feet is another capital with the figures of the Holy Trinity.
