The current Plaza Mayor is dominated by the City Hall, built in the early 20th century. The reconstruction of the area surrounding Valladolid's Plaza Mayor was an exceptional event in the 16th century. Francisco de Salamanca's project marked the first implementation of modern urban planning concepts in Spain. The main squares of Madrid and Salamanca, dating from 1617 and 1729 respectively, show a clear influence from Valladolid's Plaza Mayor.
