This intersection is known for its large video screens and neon advertising signs, mounted on the building in the north corner, as well as the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and the statue known as Eros (called sometimes The Angel of Christian Charity, and who is actually Anteros).
It is surrounded by many notable buildings, including the London Pavilion and the Criterion Theatre. Below the square is the Piccadilly Circus station of the London Underground.
The first electric advertisements for the intersection appeared in 1910, and in 1923 electric billboards were installed on the facade of the London Pavilion.
