Pantheon print in Piazza della Rotonda, ROME
Art print from the Rome Series. Pantheon of Agrippa in the Piazza della Rotonda
The construction of a large, round hall with a rectangular portico was an innovation in Roman architecture. The model of a circular space covered by a vault had been used in large bathhouses, but its use in a temple was novel.
The effect of surprise upon crossing the threshold of the door must have been remarkable. The interior space of the rotunda consists of a cylinder covered by a hemisphere.
The cylinder has a height equal to its radius, and the total height equals its diameter, so a complete sphere can be inscribed within the interior. The dome's diameter is 43.44 m, making it the largest mass concrete dome ever built.
