It was erected by order of Philip II, who entrusted the project to the architect Juan Bautista de Toledo, who died during its construction, so his disciple Juan de Herrera was in charge of finishing the project.
Throughout the 17th century, construction was halted, until during the reign of Ferdinand VI a major expansion was undertaken, which Charles III continued by adding wings that enclose the parade ground, as can be seen today.
The immense gardens, designed to enhance the royal residence on the arid and dry plateau of the center of the Iberian Peninsula, and irrigated with the waters of the Tagus and Jarama rivers, are the most important of the Habsburg period.
