It was erected by order of Philip II, who entrusted the project to the architect Juan Bautista de Toledo, who died during its construction, so his disciple Juan de Herrera was in charge of finishing the project.
During the entire 17th century, work stopped, until in the time of Ferdinand VI, an important expansion was undertaken, which Charles III continued by providing it with wings that enclose the parade ground, as it can be seen today.
