Episcopal Palace Sheet, ASTORGA
Art print from the Spain Series. Episcopal Palace of Astorga
It belongs to Gaudí's neo-Gothic period, a stage in which the architect was inspired above all by medieval Gothic art, which he freely and personally interpreted, trying to improve its structural solutions.
Neo-Gothic was one of the most successful historicist styles of that era. Gaudí studied Catalan, Balearic, and Roussillon Gothic in depth, as well as Leonese and Castilian Gothic during his stays in León and Burgos, becoming convinced that it was an imperfect, unresolved style. In his works, he eliminated the need for buttresses through the use of ruled surfaces, and he removed excessive cresting and openwork.
