The Roman wall surrounds the historic center of the city. The ancient Roman city of Lucus Augusti, founded by Paulus Fabius Maximus in the year 13 BC. C. with the purpose of definitively annexing the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula to the Roman Empire, a defense wall was provided in the Lower Empire that has lasted, with few reforms, until the present day.
The wall, with a length of 2,266 m. Crowned by 85 powerful towers, it delimits the historic center of the city.
Built as a separation and defense, it has become an integrating element between the ancient Lucus and the one that has developed around it. Its ten doors serve to connect one part of the city to the other and its promenade, adarve, has become another street that is traveled by local and visiting pedestrians.
