The Roman wall surrounds the historic center of the city. The ancient Roman city of Lucus Augusti, founded by Paulus Fabius Maximus in 13 BC with the aim of definitively annexing the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula to the Roman Empire, was endowed in the Late Roman Empire with a defensive wall that has endured, with few alterations, to the present day.
The wall, with a length of 2,266 m, crowned by 85 powerful towers, delimits the historic center of the city.
Built as a barrier and for defense, it has become an integrating element between ancient Lucus and the city that has developed around it. Its ten gates serve to connect one part of the city with the other, and its rampart walkway has become just another street, frequented by locals and visitors alike.
