Art print from the Spain Series. Monastery of Yuste in Cáceres
In 1556, Charles I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire decided to retire to a monastery to live a monastic life, choosing the Monastery of Yuste for this purpose.
The Palace-House consisted of two floors with four rooms each, arranged around an interior courtyard. The emperor's rooms were located next to the church choir, allowing him to attend religious services from his own bedroom, seated on his litter, where he remained bedridden due to the severe gout that afflicted him.
