Monastery of San Lorenzo Print, EL ESCORIAL
Art print from the Spain Series. Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial
The Monastery is a complex that includes a royal palace, a basilica, a pantheon, a library, and a monastery. It was built between 1563 and 1584.
It is one of the most unique examples of Renaissance architecture in Spain and Europe. It was conceived in the second half of the 16th century by King Philip II, and its architects included Juan Bautista de Toledo and Juan de Herrera, among others.
From the late 16th century, it was considered the Eighth Wonder of the World, both for its size and functional complexity and for its enormous symbolic value. Its architecture marked the transition from the Plateresque Renaissance style to unadorned classicism.
