The cloister of the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, considered the most representative example of Toledo Gothic architecture, was commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs under the direct patronage of the queen. It was completed in 1476, while the rest of the monastery took several more years to finish. However, the architect had to modify his initial design on the orders of Isabella I, who wanted the building to reflect the magnificence of her vow. Thus, around 1484, a second phase of construction took place, affecting the cloister. It is important to note that, although it ultimately did not become her final resting place, Isabella I intended San Juan de los Reyes to be her burial site and was therefore particularly demanding.
