Monastery of San Juan de la Peña, HUESCA
Art print. Royal Monastery of San Juan de la Peña
The Old Monastery of San Juan de la Peña is a jewel of the medieval period. The preserved buildings, only a portion of what once existed, are excellent examples of the successive artistic styles throughout the various periods in which this unique center thrived. The Romanesque period (11th to 13th centuries) stands out, with remarkable examples of architecture, painting, and especially sculpture. The historical and artistic complex of San Juan de la Peña is completed by the New Monastery, dating from the 17th century, and the churches of San Caprasio and Santa María in the nearby town of Santa Cruz de la Serós, both also from the Romanesque period.
