The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet is the prototype of a Spanish Cistercian abbey. Located in the Cuenca de Barberá region, within the municipality of Vimbodí i Poblet, in Tarragona, the first monastery was promoted and sponsored by Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, who gave it to the Bernardine monks of the Abbey of Fontfroide in 1149.
It was the royal pantheon of the Crown of Aragon, from the end of the 14th century until the extinction of the royal house of Aragon in the 15th century.
Enriched by various donations, it reached its peak in the 14th century, and its total decline and abandonment in 1835 as a consequence of the Mendizábal confiscations. In 1991 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
