Almadén and Idrija share UNESCO World Heritage status.
They encompass two mercury mining sites from two different countries.
Almadén includes buildings related to the history of mining, such as the castle, religious buildings and traditional homes.
Idrija has shops dedicated to mercury and infrastructure, as well as a residential neighborhood and a miners' theater. They show the importance of the intercontinental trade in mercury, which generated important exchanges between Europe and America for centuries.
The two sites represent the two largest mercury mines in the world and have been in operation until recently.
