Mercury Mines Sheet in Almadén, CIUDAD REAL
Art print from the Spain Series. Mercury Mines in Almadén
Almadén and Idrija share the UNESCO World Heritage status.
They encompass two mercury mining sites in two different countries.
Almadén includes buildings related to the history of mining, such as the castle, religious buildings and traditional houses.
Idrija features mercury-related businesses and infrastructure, as well as a residential neighborhood and a miners' theater. These reflect the importance of the intercontinental mercury trade, which generated significant exchanges between Europe and the Americas for centuries.
The two sites represent the two largest mercury mines in the world and were in operation until recently.
