It was the forum of the city of Rome, that is, the central area, similar to the central squares in current cities, where the institutions of government, market and religion are located.
Just like today it was where commerce, business, prostitution, religion and the administration of justice took place.
It stood the communal home. Series of pavement remains show that sediments eroded from the surrounding hills were already raising the level of the forum in the early days of the Republic. It had originally been a swampy area, which was drained by the Tarquins through the Cloaca Maxima. Its final travertine pavement, which can still be seen, dates back to the reign of Caesar Augustus.
