Peñíscola, on the Costa del Azahar (Castellón), is one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. Its old town, which juts out into the Mediterranean Sea forming a small peninsula, rises to 65m around the historic Papa Luna Castle.
It was inhabited by Iberians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs. From 1233 onwards, after the reconquest by James I, the Templar castle was built.
The current Castle was built starting in 1411 with the arrival of Pedro Martínez de Luna, better known as Papa Luna.
