The Onyar River flows through the city, dividing it into two parts: the "Old Quarter" on the eastern bank and the "Mercadal Quarter" on the western bank. The two quarters are connected by four bridges.
The river houses, or hanging houses, are one of Girona's most striking features and a defining characteristic of the city. These colorful houses, seemingly perched on either bank of the river, offer one of the most picturesque and iconic views of Girona. Most of these houses were built during the 19th and 20th centuries and were restored in the late 20th century.
