St. Peter's Basilica Art Print, ROME

Art print from the Roma Series. St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican

Churches have existed on the site of the basilica since the 4th century. The construction of the current building, on the old Constantinian basilica, began in 1506, by order of Pope Julius II, and ended in 1626. Some of the most renowned architects in history worked on it, such as Donato Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini.
The construction was commissioned to the architect Donato d'Angelo Bramante. A building with a Greek cross plan inscribed in a square and covered by five domes, the central one largest and supported by four large pillars. Under the direction of Michelangelo, the walls of the apse were raised, of imposing monumentality. However, the most important contribution of the great genius was the large dome that is located right above the main altar, over the tomb of the apostle Saint Peter.
