Gran Vía print from Callao, MADRID
Art print from the Spain Series. The Gran Vía from Callao .
The second section of the Gran Vía was built between 1917 and 1922, although the final handover of the works would not take place until 1927.
Callao Square existed before the major reform that resulted in the construction of the Gran Vía in 1910; its name was given to this space in honor of the Battle of Callao.
In 1939, after the Spanish Civil War, businessman Antonio Rodilla began his confectionery business with a small shop in the plaza. In 1952, the Galerías Preciados department store opened on the south side of the Plaza, occupying the site of the recently demolished Hotel Florida. Following its renovation and inauguration on July 1, 1960, the plaza acquired its current appearance.
