The second section of the Gran Vía was built between 1917 and 1922, although the final delivery of works would not be done until 1927.
The Plaza de Callao existed before the great reform that entailed the construction of the Gran Vía in 1910. Its name was given to this space in honor of the Callao combat.
In 1939, after the Civil War, businessman Antonio Rodilla began his baking activity with a small store in the square. In 1952, the Galerías Preciados warehouses were established in the south wing of the Plaza. Occupying the site of the recently demolished Hotel Florida building. In the renovation that it subsequently underwent, after the inauguration on July 1, 1960, the square took on its current appearance.
