It was the forum of the city of Rome, that is, the central area, similar to the central squares in modern cities, where the institutions of government, market and religion are located.
Just as it is today, it was where trade, business, prostitution, religion, and the administration of justice took place.
The communal hearth was located there. Sections of paving stones show that sediments eroded from the surrounding hills were already raising the level of the forum during the early Republic. Originally a marshy area, it was drained by the Tarquins via the Cloaca Maxima. Its final travertine paving, which can still be seen, dates from the reign of Caesar Augustus.
