Notre Dame Cathedral Art Print, PARIS
Art print from the Paris Series. Eiffel Tower
Its construction began in 1163 and was completed in 1345. Dedicated to Mary, it is located on the small Island of the Cité, surrounded by the waters of the Seine River.
A duality of stylistic influences still exists in this cathedral: on the one hand, reminiscences of Norman Romanesque, with its strong and compact unity; on the other, the already innovative use of Gothic architectural developments, which lend the building a lightness and apparent ease in its vertical construction and in supporting the weight of its structure. The floor plan is defined by a Latin cross oriented to the West. The cross is "embedded" in the building, enveloped by a double ambulatory that runs through the choir at the east end and extends parallel to the nave, thus creating four side aisles.
