Alcantara Bridge Sheet, TOLEDO
Art print from the Toledo Series. Alcántara Bridge
The Alcántara Bridge spans the Tagus River. Located at the foot of San Servando Castle and next to the Alcántara Gate, its construction is documented as dating back to Roman times, during the founding of Toletum. It was one of the bridges providing access to the city and, in the Middle Ages, was a mandatory entry point for all pilgrims.
It is heavily fortified with two gates at its ends, one in the Baroque style and the other dating back to medieval times. This bridge was subjected to constant attacks during the Reconquista and has been rebuilt several times.
It was declared a national monument in 1921.
