Bilbao estuary print, SANTURCE
Art print from the Spain Series. Bilbao Estuary in Santurtzi
The history of the city and the estuary are inextricably linked: Bilbao was founded where the estuary became navigable and a bridge spanned it. The first signs of settlement date back to 1075, with a group of fishermen gathering around the small church in the territory of Santurce. From that moment, a rapid development of maritime trade began throughout the Middle Ages, including the founding of the town of Bilbao in 1300 and Portugalete in 1322. In the following centuries, the port consolidated its position as the most important commercial center of the Lordship of Biscay, directing its activities first towards the rest of the European continent, and later towards the American colonies.
