Peñíscola, on the Costa del Azahar (Castellón), is one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. Its old town, which juts out into the Mediterranean Sea forming a small peninsula, rises to 65m around the historic Papa Luna Castle.
It was inhabited by Iberians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs. Starting in 1233, after the reconquest of James I., the Templar castle was built.
Starting in 1411 with the arrival of Pedro Martínez de Luna, better known as Papa Luna, the current Castle was built.
