The Old Town of Cáceres is delimited into two large areas by the wall: intramuros and extramuros.
The intramural enclosure is what is usually known as the "Monumental City" or "Old Part" and is the best known, while the extramural area is less known. The entire Old Town, since the Middle Ages, has been divided into 4 parishes, around which the structure of the city was configured. The 4 parishes are Santa María, San Mateo, Santiago and San Juan, with the first two being intramural and the last two being extramural.
