Begoña Basilica Print, BILBAO
Art print from the Spain Series. Basilica of Begoña
Construction began in the first decade of the 16th century. It consists of a wide central nave with a polygonal apse and two slightly lower side aisles covered with ribbed vaults in the 17th century, supported by ten robust cylindrical pillars. During the century of construction, the unified Gothic style underwent some changes, as by the mid-16th century, the main portal was designed as a magnificent Mannerist triumphal arch. The rest of the church maintains the aforementioned unified Gothic style. The construction was financed by alms from the faithful, mostly residents of the town of Bilbao. Evidence of this can be seen in the small shields that crown the pillars of the central nave, which do not bear the coats of arms of noble families, but rather the emblems of merchants and guilds of the town. The image of the Virgin could not be moved to its new church until December 1603, when it was installed on a modest altar.
